2025 started with a bang - the electron based version of FitnessTracker was incredibly useful but the performance just didn't cut it. And it got worse - a lot of my performance problems came because I was remarkably bad at design. And so thus started a year that proved to be one full of learning. Here is a quick review:

  • If you've been on this site in 2024 or before, you were likely horrified by how things looked. I was too, but didn't devote the time to getting better. 2025 was the year that that changed - I started a self directed learning program, started rebuilding sites and spent a lot more time than I care to admit implementing other people's designs. As an example, I reimplemented apple.com so many times in scss that I can recite vast parts of their web copy.
  • Electron didn't do it, but Tauri has (with some reservations). Getting down with Tauri has meant getting deep down with Rust. My relationship with Rust is odd - it's likely my favourite language to read but rust-analyzer takes about as much out of my system as Baldur's Gate 3. One is writing code...the other is trying to woo Shadowheart with D&D. I'm not amused.
  • In order to reasonably build production level desktop apps that I could sell, I had to invest in tooling. Logging was a constant thorn in my side, but I finally got the logging tool of my dreams built. It's currently the only debugging tool that I use.
  • Baseball really annoyed me in 2025, but watching Trevor Bauer get rocked in a dead ball league gave me a little bit of baseball related happiness. Gerrit Cole's TJ was part of it. But mostly, watching the Yankees consistently lose the free agents they wanted in a retooling that will never end has gotten to be a bit much. It's telling that unquestionably good fits like Cody Bellinger want out.
  • Speaking of baseball, I enjoyed watching the Blue Jays this postseason. I'm obviously not a Jays fan but they've got a really exciting lineup. It will be interesting to see where Bo Bichette lands this season - his speed has regressed to Paul Goldschmidt levels and he's been injury prone. He's a questionable fielder at shortstop and at this point honestly tracks best as a DH. It doesn't seem like he's too excited to play DH and the numbers people have been throwing around for him don't match the 6-8 WAR DH that he tracks to be.
  • According to Apple Music, I either listen to Wire too much or nowhere near enough.
  • In 2025 all of my websites changed from Hugo over to Eleventy. It's been amazing and I've gotten to really enjoy nunjucks.
