Thanks for your comment! I love Twitter, I have learned a whole lot and I have met some amazing people through it. And frankly, I do see its value as a marketing tool, just not necessarily the way that most agencies talk about it. I wrote another article today where I go a little deeper into what I mean - I'd love to hear your thoughts about it!
FastJack - thanks for leaving your comment!
If I were you, I'd check out my latest article. It is titled, "Customer acquisition costs and effective social media". I wrote it with you and a few other people in mind and hope it did a better job of explaining my position.
I guess that social media has a place in marketing, but it has an extremely high acquisition cost. Consequently, I think it is more valuable to focus on building a product/service people actually need, making sure the experience of using it is solid, and then treating your existing customers like gold. The goal is to create solid word of mouth and get your existing customers to leverage their networks to help sell your product for you.
From there, social media's true value is in becoming part of the conversation, getting to know your customers, and building relationships. Definitely valuable, but not necessarily as a tool to acquire new customers. Does that make any more sense??

Hi Collette!

Thanks for your comment! Say, your followers mentioning you in comments, saying how great you are, giving #FF, which gives more followers to the account. Every once in awhile you'll put out some sort of branded tweet--which your new followers will see. Especially if your tweeter(s) are just regular desk jockeys that are particularly clever--and yes, you don't hire anyone who ever even USES the word guru--this doesn't seem expensive.

I guess my big question is there something besides Cascades that could be use for marketing? Ten minutes, hey? Wow.

Thanks for writing this! This is great information. I just started my own business doing wedding flowers, and I 100% related to every situation you wrote about. Mostly though, the part about how you related self-employment to a bi-polar disorder. I cannot tell you how many times I high-fived myself, celebrated early & did victory dances every time a bride made me feel I had their business. The rollercoaster ride is a definate free fall from joy to despair and riddled with self-doubt and second guessing my ability to really make it into a viable business.
Thanks for the inspiration to keep at it, and for confirming that real life experience, will always trump textbook "advice".

This article made me laugh out loud so many times, and I read it from start to finish with a smile on my face.
